MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- Riley County officers following up on a case at a Manhattan pawn shop ended up launching a new investigation when they encountered a man and woman at the business.
At 1:30 PM Tuesday, members of the Riley County Police Department were at Wildcat Pawn on Tuttle Creek Boulevard on another matter when they noticed the duo at the pawn shop.
A spokesman for the RCPD says Laura Heffner, 31, and Derek Beerbower, 28, both of Manhattan, showed strong signs of impairment and had a one-year-old child with them.
According to officials, Heffner and Beerbower were caught with methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia and were arrested. Along with drug charges, they were also arrested for child endangerment.
The one-year-old child was place in police protective custody.
On Wednesday morning, Heffner and Beerbower were still confined in the Riley County Jail.
