SHAWNEE COUNTY -- The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office has seen an increase in credit card numbers being breached in the last several days. Detectives have seen an increase in “skimming.” Skimming involves stealing your credit or debit card account numbers through the use of a data storage or collection device.
Skimmers often find work with legitimate businesses and swipe or record information from the card when in their possession and out of eye site of the card owner. The Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens to frequently check their account activity online or by phone. Report any fraudulent activity to both your financial institution and local law enforcement agency.
Additional information regarding identity theft is available on the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office website at www.ShawneeSheriff.org.
