TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A criminal complaint reveals new details on the more than three dozen charges against a man suspected in a string of armed robberies - and they allege sexual assault in more than just one of the holdups.
The Shawnee County District Attorney's office released the criminal complaint Friday that it filed late Thursday against Arthur Lee Crain III.
It details 37 counts, covering six dates from July 12th to August 24th.
Fifteen of those charges stem from incidents August 15th. That is the date a Dominos Pizza on South Topeka Boulevard was held up and a female worker sexually assaulted. Charges for that date include rape and criminal sodomy, as well as five counts of aggravated robbery and eight counts of aggravated assault.
Until the complaint, the Dominos incident was the only holdup during which police said a sex crime had occurred. But the charges allege it wasn't the only one. Nine more counts stem from July 30th, a day on which Topeka Police reported four armed robberies in the Capital City, including one at the Prize Package on SE 6th St. The DA filed three counts of aggravated sexual battery - nonconsensual touching for incident that day, referring to three different victims. The date also led to three counts each of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault. Overall, the nine counts from July 30th identify a total of seven victims. A spokesperson for the DA's office declined to say Friday if the nine counts all stem from the Prize Package, other locations or a combination of locations.
A second rape charge was filed for a July 12th incident, while a kidnapping count came from a July 16th aggravated robbery.
Crain is scheduled for a docket hearing September 6th. He's being held on $500,000 bond.
