Author Addresses Why Teens Kill

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A capacity crowd of law enforcement, school administrators, social workers and counselors gathered in Topeka Tuesday to learn why teenagers kill.

Author Phil Chalmers discussed the warning signs to look for, as well as triggers that actually cause kids to move toward homicide.

Chalmers believes that classes like this can prevent crimes involving teenagers.

"Teen murder is a preventable crime," Chalmers said. "Shootings are a preventable crime. We can stop this if we know what we are looking for. So I think it is very important that people learn the signs, learn how to be proactive, learn how to protect their families, protect their schools, and I firmly believe we could stop this from happening."

Chalmers says the three leading causes of teen murder are unstable home lives and being bullied at school, an obsession with violent entertainment, and the teens themselves being suicidal.
