TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)_ Capital Area Crime Stoppers returned to a double homicide last August in hopes of uncovering new clues that may help detectives solve the case.
On August 20th 2009 an unknown subject or subjects entered the home of Leaha Schmuck and Walia Tindall at 1223 SE 31st Terrace. Both women were shot and died as a result of their injuries. According to the family, the victims were girlfriends.
Topeka Police believed a person who knew the women arrived at their mobile home in the 1200 block of SE 41st Terrace around 7 am. He found their bodies along with a six-year old girl, who was unharmed.
Family members said the girl was Schmuck's daughter. Police say detectives interviewed the girl with the help of a counselor. They do not believe she witnessed the killings.
Neighbors say they saw a water tank outside that was hit by gunshots, but they didn't hear anything that might have unfolded early Thursday morning.
Family members of one of the victims waited in the streets surrounding the mobile home where the women was found, hoping to get any information from authorities. Lawrence Carter says his sister did not want any trouble with anyone.
Neighbors said the women kept to themselves and were good neighbors. The only indication of a problem they say was August 8th. Fire officials confirm an arson was reported on that date, with someone throwing gasoline on the women's door and setting it on fire. Police say they are looking into whether there is any connection between the incidents.
