Topeka (WIBW) - Kansas communities will be safer thanks to a public safety grant for more than $3 million.

Gov. Mark Parkinson announced Thursday that 34 public safety agencies across the state will be getting funds to prevent, solve, and control crime.

Among those who'll share the grant are the Kansas Bureua of Investigation. It will receive more than $1 million.

The Shawnee County District Attorney's office will get more than $50,000 while Shawnee Regional Prevention and Recovery Services will get more than $32,000 and Family Service and Guidance Center in Topeka will get about $7,200.

“Kansas is a safe place to live, work and raise a family,” said Governor Parkinson. “But tough economic times have had an impact on our public safety services, so these grants are greatly appreciated for the resources they provide and the citizens they protect.”

The state also received a grant to help fund substance abuse programs. The Topeka Correctional Facility will receive $85,402 to support its Substance Abuse Recovery Program. This funding was awarded through the Federal Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners Grant Program (RSAT). RSAT provides funding for treatment opportunities for adult inmates.
