SALINA, Kansas (AP) A Saline County judge delayed the sentencing
for a Salina man convicted of beating another man to death with a board.

Saline County District Judge Daniel Herbert on Monday ordered 20-year-old Preston Reyna to be evaluated at Larned State Hospital. Reyna pleaded guilty in June to unintentional second-degree murder in the death of Nicolas Chavez Castro in January.

Reyna has been previously been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. On Monday, his mother, Rosalinda Reyna, testified that on the day Castro was killed, she was trying to get someone to help her get her son to the Salina Regional Health Center.

Prosecutors say Castro was killed because Reyna mistakenly believed he had kidnapped and raped his mother.
