The following was released by the Topeka Police Thursday Morning:
On Thursday morning at 4:11 AM, July 16, 2009, Topeka Police officers were dispatched to the area of 9th and Tyler for reports of gunshots heard. Officers responded to the area. While officers were searching the area for evidence of a crime; the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center (SCECC) was notified a local hospital had received a person, with an apparent gunshot wound, for emergency treatment. Immediately following this notification, a man approached officers in the 900 block of Tyler east alley stating he had just been robbed and had fired his pistol during the struggle.
Early investigation details some of the crime. A male went to the east parking lot of the Senate Suite Apartments, 900 SW Tyler, to check on his vehicle. Two males approached him in an apparent robbery. A struggle ensued, during which, while being battered, the victim of the robbery was able to retrieve a weapon from his car and fire at his assailants. He struck one, at which time the two robbers fled. The robbers did gain access to the victim’s personal property during the struggle and stole items.
Witnesses stated the suspects appeared to have flagged a car down in the 500 block SW 10th. It was in this car the suspect was transported to a local hospital. The victim of the robbery suffered apparent abrasions and bruising during the struggle.
One suspect is still at large, according to witnesses he an African male, late teens early twenties, approximately 5’7” wearing a brown tee-shirt.
