WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A Wichita man is accused of spraying his
10-year-old stepdaughter with lighter fluid and setting her on fire
while she slept.
Twenty-eight-year-old Chris L. Newberry is charged with attempted first-degree murder and five counts of aggravated arson after a March 14 fire at the family's home. Police reopened an investigation into the fire after a social worker raised concerns, and Newberry was arrested Friday.
The criminal complaint filed by prosecutors Tuesday said Newberry sprayed lighter fluid on Caitlyn Johnson and her bed, then set her on fire.
The girl suffered second- and third-degree burns over 41 percent of her body. Her mother and three other children in the home escaped the fire unharmed.
