EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) _ The son of the founder of the
1800Mattress.com national retailer has been arraigned in a Long
Island hospital on charges of murdering his mother, who was beaten
to death at their home.
Eduardo Barragan's lawyer has entered a not guilty plea for him. Lawyer Andrew Monteleone says his 39-year-old client has heart
palpitations and was ``incoherent'' at Friday's arraignment.
Police say Barragan beat 65-year-old Kay Barragan on Tuesday after an argument at their home in Searingtown, just east of New York City.
Barragan is having a psychiatric exam to see if he's fit for trial.
His Ecuadorean mother was credited with lending $2,000 to her
husband to start the company that became 1-800-Mattres, famous for
its slogan ``leave off the last S for savings.''
The Queens company was renamed 1800mattress.com to reflect online growth.
