TOPEKA, KANSASRussell Eugene King, 49, Topeka, Kan., is charged with one count of arson to a dwelling without consent, a severity-level 6 person felony; and burglary, a severity-level 7 person felony. The crimes are alleged to have occurred May 10, 2009 at 820 SW 6th Street. Mr. King was taken into custody by the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department on March 12, 2009.

Fire Marshal Greg Bailey said there may be reason to believe King is behind other arsons in the area. He said King has been a person of interest for fire investigators regarding other fires that have occurred within the city; investigations into these incidents are on going.

Fire Officials also credit the Topeka Police Department’s Code Enforcement Unit, Weed and Seed Program and other resources dedicated to this effort, for helping to lead to this arrest.

The Topeka Fire Department and Topeka Police Department investigated the incident. Shawnee County Deputy District Attorney Matt Patterson is the prosecuting attorney.

As in all criminal cases, a person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The charging document filed merely contains allegations of criminal conduct.
