TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Local legislators and residents are hoping
to block a plan in Kansas to move additional sexual predators to
Osawatomie State Hospital.

The hospital already houses eight predators who are moving toward their eventual release from state custody.

Violent sexual offenders and those whose victims are children can be confined for treatment under Kansas law after their prison sentences end.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' budget proposals include a plan to move four additional predators to Osawatomie.

But Sen. Pat Apple, a Louisburg Republican whose district includes the hospital, has submitted petitions with about 800 signatures protesting the plan. He also is backing a bill to limit the number of predators who can be housed in any county away from the state's main predator unit at Larned State Hospital.
