Around midnight last night a young man with a handgun attempted to enter a home at 2440 SE Colonial. The man who lived in the residence saw the young man and slammed the door on him. The suspect fled to nearby 2436 SE Colonial.

The Topeka Police Response Team waited outside the residence until they obtained a warrant around 6:00 Monday morning. When the Response Team entered the home they found two young men, a woman, and a child inside. Eventually they located thee more men who were hiding in the attic.

During the pursuit the young men fell through the ceiling of the town house next door. Keica Howard had just finished feeding her two-week-old son Marcus and laid him on her bed instead of his bassinet.

"Something told me not to put him in there," said Howard.

Howard then went to help her other children get ready for school. She was with her daughter when she heard a loud boom. The ceiling in her bedroom, where little Marcus slept, had caved in.

Howard ran into the room and saw someone.

"He was hanging in the ceiling at first," said Howard.

She immediately reached for her son and noticed his bassinet was full of pieces from the ceiling.

"When I came in here I didn't realize how much of a mess it was because the first thing I did was snatch him up and run downstairs.

Howard watched, in shock, as several people came downstairs from the hole in her ceiling.

"The SWAT team came through my ceiling too and I was like, Oh my God," said Howard.

While they still cannot believe what happened they are thankful that tiny Marcus was not hurt.

"It was very traumatizing. It's a good thing he wasn't in the bassinet or he wouldn't be here." said Howard's mother Dee.

Many of Marcus' belongings were destroyed when the ceiling caved in. If you would like to help the family you can call 250-2915.
