Sentencing Delayed for Ex-debate Coach at Buhler

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) _ On the eve of sentencing for a former Kansas debate coach convicted of molesting a student, a judge granted a delay so the 69-year-old man could have eye surgery.

In a conference call late Wednesday, a doctor and an attorney for Richard Young asked that Thursday's sentencing hearing be delayed so Young could undergo surgery to reattach a retina. The doctor said Young could go blind if the surgery was not performed.

The sentencing was rescheduled for Feb. 9.

Jurors convicted Young on four counts for sexually abusing a 15-year-old foreign exchange student who stayed at his home in 2007. He's accused of fondling the student within days of the boy's arrival to attend Buhler High School, where Young taught.
