TOPEKA, Kan. - The Topeka Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1510 SW Lane St., shortly before 9:45p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27. Fire officials arrived on scene and learned that residents had discovered a fire in the south stairwell of the apartment building between the second and third floor.
The fire activated the alarm system within the building and the system alerted the occupants so that everyone was able to evacuate without any reports of injury.
Firefighters were able to quickly locate and extinguish the fire and the Topeka Fire Department's Investigations Unit was summoned to assist with an investigation of the incident.
The investigation revealed:
- Cause of the fire - incendiary/intentionally set
- Origin - South stairwell between the second and third floor, on the landing
- Estimated dollar loss - $25,000; $23,000 was estimated structural damage/loss and $2,000 is estimated content damage/loss
