WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A federal judge rules that the Kaweah Indian Nation must forfeit more than $377,000 in a scheme to defraud immigrants.
U.S. District Judge Wesley Brown issued a preliminary order of forfeiture Monday.
Prosecutors say Malcolm Webber, the tribe's self-proclaimed grand chief, agreed to the forfeiture in exchange for the government's agreement not to seek a personal money judgment or seek forfeiture of assets not seized.
Prosecutors claim the tribe falsely promised that memberships would confer U.S. citizenship.
Webber was found guilty of six charges and acquitted of one.
