WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Testimony begins in the capital murder trial of a Wichita man accused of orchestrating the death of a 14-year-old girl who became pregnant with his child.
Elgin "Ray Ray'' Robinson Jr. could face the death penalty if convicted of killing Chelsea Brooks, who was nine months pregnant when she died in June 2006. Robinson denies that he arranged Chelsea's killing.
The first prosecution witness called Wednesday was the girl's mother, Terri Brooks, who testified that she called Robinson after learning he and her daughter were having sex. Brooks said she told Robinson to stay away from Chelsea.
Brooks is expected to take the stand again Thursday.
Prosecutors say Robinson feared that the girl's parents would have him charged with statutory rape. In Kansas, no one under the age of 16 can consent to having sex.
