JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) _ The mother of a 15-year-old boy says giving probation to the southeast Kansas woman accused of having sex with
him sends a message that it's OK to abuse a child.
Ashley Thompson of Columbus was sentenced Tuesday to two years of intensive probation. Cherokee County District Judge Kent Lynch said his decision follows sentencing guidelines and was appropriate because the 23-year-old woman had no criminal history.
Thompson pleaded guilty last month to felony attempted aggravated indecent liberties, reduced from three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.
A Missouri prosecutor on Monday dropped a statutory rape charge against Thompson for allegedly having sex with the boy in Jasper County. The prosecutor said the boy didn't want to testify against Thompson. He had been a baby sitter for Thompson's children.
