WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Authorities say a Wichita police officer is hospitalized with a gunshot wound, and the suspect has died.
Wichita Deputy Police Chief Robert Lee says the officer tried to stop a suspicious person on foot about 11:30 last night when the officer was shot.
Other officers who arrived at the scene followed the suspect, who had run.
As they closed in, the officers said they heard a gun shot and found the suspect had apparently turned the gun on himself.
The officer who was shot was not identified. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound to his upper leg. The suspect was taken to the same hospital, where he died.
