New Law Limits Reduced Sentences for Sex Crimes

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A new law taking effect July 1 will strengthen sentencing guidelines when it come to sex offenders.

The legislation was sponsored by Topeka Rep. Joe Patton. It will keep judges from imposing lesser sentences for those convicted of serious, sexually violent crime. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed the bill Thursday.

The Republican lawmaker said he pushed the bill after a Topeka judge departed from sentencing guidelines last year for a man convicted of numerous sex crimes against a child.
