Accused Store Manager Killer's Trial Began

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ The first-degree murder trial for one of the three people accused of killing a Bonner Springs store manager is under way.

Opening statements are expected in Wyandotte County District Court Tuesday morning in the trial of 20-year-old Robert Haberlein of Kansas City, Kan. Judge David Boal had ruled that Haberlein, who was 17 at the time of the crime, be tried as an adult.

Haberlein and the others are charged with killing Dollar General night manager Robin Bell in 2005. The 44-year-old woman was found dead inside the store after she failed to come home from work after closing time.

John Backus of Bonner Springs is also charged with first-degree murder, and a 17-year-old girl who testified in the preliminary hearings of the men may be tried as a juvenile.
