A McPherson man has been found guilty of fatally beating his stepfather with an aluminum baseball bat last year. The conviction of Jeffrey Nelson on Friday came after an earlier mistrial in the case. The 24-year-old Nelson was found guilty of first-degree murder, burglary and three counts of forgery in the April 2007 beating of his stepfather, Stanley Swartz. The 59-year-old Swartz died nearly a month later.

A mistrial was declared in the case in January after three to
four jury members recognized witnesses in the trial. The jury pool had heard a prospective witness list before the trial began. But some jurors didn't realize they knew any witnesses until they saw them.
