Oldest Murder Defendant Pleads Guilty

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ An 83-year-old man thought to be the oldest murder defendant in Kansas history has pleaded guilty to a
lesser charge.

Eugene F. Coffman pleaded guilty Tuesday in Wyandotte County District Court to voluntary manslaughter in the strangling his wife, Beverly Coffman, on April 10, 2005. The 78-year-old woman died at the couple's home in Kansas City, Kan.

Coffman was 80 when he was charged with premeditated first-degree murder.

The couple had been married for almost 53 years.

Coffman is scheduled to be sentenced on May 16.
