Should Olathe Teen Be Tried as Adult

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) _ A judge is hearing testimony on whether a 16-year-old Johnson County boy is tried as an adult or a juvenile in the death of another teen after a fight.

District Judge Brenda Cameron is expected to make a determination after testimony wraps up Wednesday. Sixteen-year-old Dakota DeRemus of Gardner collapsed and died Feb. 4 outside his home after he and Dustin Howard engaged in a fight the two had set up beforehand.

DeRemus' mother testified Tuesday that her son had trouble with schoolwork and didn't have the social skills to get along with other youths.

Howard is charged with involuntary manslaughter. His lawyer contends DeRemus died from a genetic heart defect. Prosecutors say Howard willingly took part in the fight and knew that harm could result.
