The Topeka Fire Department's Investigation Unit has ruled that an overnight fire at a vacant home was intentionally set.
Fire crews arrived at the Topeka home, 428 SE Leland St, around one-thirty Wednesday morning, reporting heavy smoke billowing from the rear of the structure.
Firefighters searched the building, finding no one inside, and proceeded to contain the flames.
Further investigation determined that an incendiary device in the basement caused the fire. The Investigation Unit could not find any potential accidental cause of the fire.
Witnesses told fire officials they had seen a person running from the building. Corroborating statements led investigators to identify a person of interest, who was detained on the scene for questioning, but later released.
Fire officials estimate the structural damage at around $8,000.
