OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) _ A woman in her 20s is facing charges after trying to get away from police by crawling through a 600-foot drainage pipe in Johnson County.
While helping the Kansas City, Mo., woman after she ran out of fuel early Wednesday, Leawood police discovered that she was wanted on arrest warrants. She asked to go to the bathroom at a convenience store, but bolted out the back door and into the three-foot diameter pipe.
Police said the woman crawled through the pipe, under eight lanes of Interstate 435, but hit a dead end when the pipe turned up 90 degrees to a retention pond in Overland Park.
Firefighters from Overland Park rescued the woman, who by then was unconscious. She was taken to a hospital with hypothermia.
Two Leawood officers who chased her through the drainage pipe were not injured.
