NICKERSON, Kan. (AP) _ Officials believe a vandal caused a 6,000-gallon gasoline spill from a storage tank near Hutchinson.
Authorities say whoever was responsible for the spill at Ramsey Oil went to a lot of trouble to cause it. No arrests have been made.
The company reported the spill Wednesday after employees found that the fuel had leaked from an above-ground tank on farmland southwest of Nickerson.
Ramsey Oil owner Loren Alderson said he believes the vandalism took place overnight Monday or early Tuesday. Alderson said he planned to have a contractor start moving the dirt Thursday.
Kansas Department of Health and Environment spokesman Joe Blubaugh said crews may use a cleanup method called land farming, in which thin layers of contaminated dirt are spread over the land to allow evaporation.
