TOPEKA – Project ReDirectory phone book recycling began its 23rd year on Monday afternoon at Berryton Elementary, 2921 SE 69th.

Last year students of Berryton Elementary recycled the most outdated phone books earning the right to host the kick-off this year.

Students of Shawnee County schools, as well as citizens, are “challenged” to recycle their outdated phone books. The participating school that recycles the most outdated phone books per capita will receive a first place banner and host the 2013 kick off.
Project ReDirectory is part of YP’s, formerly AT&T Advertising Solutions’, corporate citizenship and sustainability efforts.

The campaign is sponsored by YP and organized by Keep America Beautiful-Topeka/Shawnee County. Topeka hosted the first telephone book recycling project in Kansas leading the way for other communities across the state to establish similar programs.

New 2012 Topeka YP Real Yellow Pages directories will be delivered to businesses and residences starting August 24 and outdated directories can then be dropped off at several locations throughout Topeka and surrounding communities from now through September 30.

The paper for YP directories is manufactured employing environmentally responsible production methods, including the use of recycled paper waste and leftover scraps of sawdust and wood chips from lumber production processes. Residents and businesses can call YP Project ReDirectory at 1-800-953-4400 for information about recycling outdated phone books in this community.
