Things had been very quiet in the deer blind and it seemed a good idea to send Riley over the hill behind the blind on a short recon mission to break the monotony and to diffuse tone of he excess energy trapped in the small space inside the blind. But, as soon as Riley went creeping up the hill behind our position for a look-see on the other side, a glance out the front window showed that the deer were now moving again where they were ‘supposed’ to. One was calmly standing at the field edge 100 yards away. It had appeared , slipping like a ghost through the 6 foot tall CRP grass out into the open. As I questioned the decision made moments earlier, Riley glanced back and saw us frantically signaling him to crawl back. Would this work out after all? Once we were all reunited semi-quietly in the blind it was up to Riley to settle down enough to make the shot if the situation provided one. “Breath slowly Riley”. We were hoping things would slow down now and finally fall in place but this deer, a legal doe, was farther out than the others had been and even though perfectly broadside, the shot would be a stretch for any nervous hunter. Could a first timer do it? “ Slowly exhale halfway and squeeze the trigger Riley”. The doe bolted at the shot, tail high, and off into the fence line the others had appeared from. With no reaction from the doe that she may have been hit and the extended range of the shot, We were not optimistic about the outcome. We sat for a few minutes, to let the scene settle down, and went downrange to look for any sign of a positive outcome. The open area where the doe had been standing showed us nothing encouraging. However, only 10 feet away was some sign. What a relief. Immediately, the two 12 year old trackers went into overdrive to unravel the trail. It was short and sweet. The deer barely went 50 feet before running out of steam. Later, we found out why. Riley had made a heart-stopping shot @ 160 yards! After the recovery a photo session, field dressing/anatomy lesson and a trip out for breakfast took most of the morning.

Only one day later the dew point was 7 below zero. What can that mean? How do you dew @ -7 ? Luckily Mark found something to shoot before this blast slammed the door shut on our rifle season. We were out Sat in a howling but balmy breeze when I spotted a beefy dark body standing on the field edge @ 130 yds. It was only 15 min into legal light and Mark was dozing comfortably in his chair when I calmly hissed, BUCK, BUCK, BUCK !!!!! That really helped to calm him down. Once he was fully awake, Mark made the 130 yd shot. The buck was a good specimen, heavily muscled and thick-necked, but had worn most of the points off the left beam by playing too rough with his friends. Mark is on the right in photo.
