Topeka Man's Mother, Inspiration For NFL Dream, Loses Cancer Fight

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Topeka mother who's battle with cancer gave her son inspiration to attack an NFL dream has passed away.

66 year old Lena O'hara lost her battle with Cancer last Saturday (April 27) at Stormont-Vail.

In February, WIBW reported that while she was battling stage four cancer, her son Patrick was raising money through an online funding site for a chance to kick in front of NFL scouts.

Patrick says his workouts went well and he is just waiting to hear back from NFL teams.

He kicked this 70 yard field goal in her memory this past week inside Washburn University's Yager Stadium.

A celebration of life visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 pm.
Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Jimmy V Foundation at

100% of all contributions go to fund cancer research as administrative costs are covered by a separate foundation.
