The following news release is from St. Francis Health Center:

Cathy Dahl, DO, a urogynecologist with St. Francis Urogynecology, recently became the first woman in the state of Kansas to earn board certification from the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ABOG) as a urogynecologist.

“This is a new sub-specialty under ABOG called female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.” Dr. Dahl said. “I was one of the first physicians selected to sit for and pass the board examination, and the only physician in Topeka to become certified.”

Dr. Dahl also is the first urogynecologist in Kansas and one of the first in the nation to offer her patients single-incision minimally-invasive surgery using the da Vinci robot.

“I use the da Vinci for most of the surgeries I do,” Dr. Dahl said. “Most physicians make three to five incisions to insert the surgical instruments and perform the procedure, but I am now using a single one-inch incision made in the patient’s belly button.”

Dr. Dahl uses single-incision surgery to perform hysterectomies, oophorectomies and endometriosis surgery. Advantages to patients include very little scarring, reduced pain and quicker recovery times. Dr. Dahl was selected to be one of the first to perform this surgery based on her extensive experience with the da Vinci. She began using the robot at St. Francis in 2007.

Dr. Dahl also is a member of the teaching faculty for Intuitive Surgical and Ethicon Women’s Health and Urology, a division of Johnson and Johnson.

Dr. Dahl joined St. Francis Health in 2005. She performed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She received her degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and BioSciences.

St. Francis Urogynecology is relocating to 601 SW Corporate View. In addition to Cathy Dahl, DO, Manya Schmidt, APRN, will provide comprehensive care for women’s pelvic health issues, including: fistulas, uterine prolapse, urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, interstim placement for urinary and fecal incontinence and physical therapy for patients suffering from incontinence and pelvic prolapse. Dr. Dahl and Schmidt will see patients at the new location beginning October 21.
