TOPEKA — The Topeka Rescue Mission’s fifth annual Rescue Run is scheduled to begin at 5:00 Saturday evening, November 27th, at 534 South Kansas Avenue, in front of the Bank of America building. This fundraising event for the Mission features a 5K run and 1.5-mile walk in and around downtown Topeka.
Christmas gift donations for residents in need to be collected during event.
In 2009, the event brought in $26,793 with 497 participants. So far, the Mission has raised more than $26,400 with over 570 runners and walkers already pre-registered. Proceeds will benefit the Mission by enabling it to continue to shelter and care for the countless men, women and children who are homeless or in need that pass through its doors on a daily basis.
“Times continue to be tough for many in our community as record numbers of people have requested assistance with the basic necessities of life this year. I’m proud to belong to a community of compassionate and caring citizens who do what they can in a time of need,” said Barry Feaker, Topeka Rescue Mission Executive Director. “We appreciate the tremendous support that many individuals and companies have provided for the Rescue Run and look forward to working again with our neighbors to help our neighbors in their time of need.”
This year the community will also have the opportunity to donate new Christmas gifts at drop-off locations across the street from the Bank of America building on Kansas Avenue and near the Christmas tree south of the Westar Energy entrance on Kansas Avenue. The Mission will donate the gifts to local residents in need.
In addition, runners and walkers interested in forming a downtown run club are encouraged to attend a brief, informal meeting in the Bank of America north lobby following the race (while race results are being tabulated).
People interested in running or walking in the Rescue Run on Saturday can register and see the race route at www.topekarescuerun.org. Online registration ends Thanksgiving night at midnight, but walk-in registration will be held at the Bank of America Building on Friday from 4-7pm and Saturday from 1-4pm.
Registration is $35 on race day and $30 before race day.
The Topeka Rescue Mission has served our community for more than 57 years and is dedicated to providing food, shelter, clothing, training and hope to homeless and impoverished men, women and children. In 2009, TRM housed 1,922 unduplicated individuals, provided 474,492 meals to people in need, and provided household items to over 4,500 individuals from the community. As safety nets continue to erode in our society, the need to serve those in need continues to grow.
The Topeka Rescue Mission is located at 600 N. Kansas Avenue in Topeka.
