TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A recent rise in flu symptoms around our area had one Topeka hospital setting a 24-hour record for patients in its emergency room.

Both Stormont-Vail HealthCare and St. Francis Health report a rise in influenza.

St. Francis had 39 confirmed cases of Influenza A in the past week, and admitted six of those individuals.

Stormont-Vail ran 493 tests in the past week, with 86 positive results.

In addition, the 246 people who visited their emergency department Saturday was the most ever for a single day. A hospital spokesperson told 13 News most of those patients were experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Both facilities say one of the best ways to stop the spread of the virus is to avoid contact with anyone who has flu or cold symptoms and to wash your hands.

They urge anyone feeling ill to not visit hospital patients.

Flu symptoms include body aches, fevers, respiratory problems, nausea and vomiting.
