Lemonade Sales Benefit Children Battling Cancer
Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) - Local volunteers are helping to fight childhood cancer one cup of lemonade at a time.
Alex's Lemonade Stand is taking place June 1 and 2 at area Hyvee stores, including Topeka, Manhattan and Lawrence, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The stand raises funds for childhood cancer research.
In 2001, Jacob Mozer, a 7-year-old in remission from cancer, decided he wanted to help raise money for childhood cancer. He had his first lemonade stand at Hyvee in Blue Springs, MO that year.
His efforts expanded and now more than 600 volunteers participate in the lemonade stands at Hyvee stores in Northeast Kansas. The regional effort has raised more than $600,000 for childhood cancer research.
Taylor Gabel is a local teen who ran the stand at the Topeka Hyvee and has a special connection to Alex.
"I have a connection to cancer because I am a cancer survivor. It's back now but I feel like it's easier for me to do it because I have cancer," Gabel said. "I can connect with the girl that did have it even though she's not alive today. I still have that."
Each year, more than 12,500 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S., which is the equivalent of two school classrooms each school day.
