The Joint Commission awarded the Gold Seal of Approval to Stormont Vail HealthCare for its Primary Stroke Center.
Stroke centers with this certification must consistently transport, assess, diagnose and treat stroke patients within 3 hours of the first symptoms.
Stormont Vail doctors stress that recognizing the symptoms and getting help in the first few hours is crucial.
"It can be a very debilitating disesase process that can forever change someone's life," Dr. Frisco Morse said. "The sooner they are able to recognize the signs and symptoms, the sooner they can come get some help and, hopefully, the sooner they'll get back to a normal life."
With about 4.7 million survivors alive today, strokes are a leading cause of long term disability in the United States.
