TOPEKA -- Mike Locke's entry into the job of caregiver began in 1990, when his father fell and broke his hip. It's taken up to nearly 20 years for Mike to do that. Mike's father moved to a care facility after his injury, while his mother, Jeanette, stayed in their apartment units.
Mike's father (also Mike) is gone now.. and his mother is in a care facility. But he still manages to make daily visits and take on other responsibilities to help her. He manages all her finances, and takes care of anything she needs. Mike doesn't mind because he knows those things have to be done.
Connie Wood of "HealthWise 55" says one-third of Americans are caring for an older adult. They're juggling fulltime jobs, and adding a new job outside their expertise.
This report outlines how our area agencies on aging have resources available to help you. One of those ways is another resource hitting the airwaves in 2010. Connie will host "For Family Caregivers" on Topeka's MyTV (Digital 13.2 and Cox Cable 11) the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month at 11:00am, beginning January 9th.
