Even with classes.. homework.. practice.. and now state tournament games.. Washburn Rural's ladies have added one more item to their 'to do' list.. coaching Topeka's Special Olympics basketball team. 17 year old hoop stars Lauren Shufelberger and Megan Ladenburger made friends with Olympian Ryan Ondercheck, and were asked if they wanted to work their magic on the other team.
The players are so grateful the young ladies can visit and practice with them. Megan says she gets tears in her eyes thinking about what the experience has meant to her.. she's even planning to major in special education to do this as an adult.
Teammate Amanda Prosser says the Lady Blues communication skills have gotten better.. and coaching the Special Olympics kids and adults makes Washburn Rural a better team at tournament time. They play Olathe East Wednesday night. The special olympics team competes in the Kansas State Tournament in about ten more days.
