(WIBW) - A Lawrence woman will spend more than three years in federal prison for credit card fraud.
43-year old Stacy Barnes-Catlett was sentenced to 39 months in federal prison. She pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.
In her plea, she admitted that in 2005 she participated in a scheme with Carrie Neighbors and other conspirators to make purchases using credit cards that didn’t belong to them.
Prosecutors say members of the conspiracy made phone calls to merchants requesting they deliver specific items such as musical instruments to a woman the caller identified as her niece. The callers gave the merchants a number from a Capital One Platinum Visa card that did not belong to them.
At the direction of Carrie Neighbors, Barnes-Catlett would then go pick up the merchandise and pay for it with the card.
On Aug. 12, 2005, Barnes-Catlett and other conspirators purchased a clarinet from Hume Music in Lawrence, Kan., using a credit card that did not belong to them. The electronic transaction was handled through First National Merchant Solutions in Omaha, Neb.
