Judge: Suspect in Clerk's Kidnapping OK to Stand Trial
A Sedgwick County judge ruled 39-year old Robert Abner is competent to stand trial. Abner is accused of kidnapping a Wichita-area convenience store clerk.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ The man accused of kidnapping a Wichita-area convenience store clerk in June has been found competent to stand trial.

Sedgwick County District Judge Eric Yost issued the ruling Thursday after reviewing 39-year-old Robert Abner's mental evaluation and set a preliminary hearing for September 11th.

Abner is charged with one count of aggravated robbery, one count of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy and six counts of rape.

Abner is accused of robbing a 48-year-old clerk while she was working at a Viola convenience store on June 23rd, blindfolding her
and forcing her to ride on the floor of his getaway car. The woman was held at a Wichita house until she was released outside her pastor's home three days later.

Abner was arrested at an Oregon motel several days later.
