TOPEKA, Kan. - A standoff occured in southeast Topeka Thursday night - as authorities were called to the scene near SE Girard and SE 35th Terrace on an attempt to serve a warrant.

We're told at about 8:30 p.m. officers were patrolling in the 200 block of SE 35th Terrace when they noticed a person they believed to be a federal fugitive. When they tried to make contact, the man ran inside a home.

Over the next hour, police blocked off streets in the area and used a loudspeaker trying to get people out of the house.

Nine people, including a child were able to get out of the house while the suspect remained inside. Police interviewed those people, who said the suspect was still hiding inside the house.

Negotiators later convinced the suspect, 29-year-old Quinton Lawton, to come out of the home.

Lawton was booked into the Department of Corrections on a federal narcotics warrant.

It is unknown at this time whether Lawton knew any of the nine subjects that were in the residence.
