The community is being challenged to get involved in fighting property crime.

The Safest Capital City Coalition announced the "Record It - Report It - and Recover It" initiative Wednesday. It's meant to reduce property theft and get stolen goods back to its owners.

To join the "team" effort, Topeka Police Capt. Ron Brown recommends writing your driver's license number on valuable items with an "Invisi-ID" pen and keeping a list of serial numbers for your big items. He says only about one-percent of items in the TPD property room has identifying markings on it, making it tough to get it back to the owners.

With the weather warming up, police also remind you to shut garage doors when you're not around so thieves can't walk right in. Also, don't leave bikes or lawn mowers in the yard where someone can take them.

this might work, if the cops spent more time solving burglaries.
