TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Washburn Ichabods cut the Northwest Missouri Bearcats lead to two points with 9:47 left to play but could not complete the comeback in a 58-50 loss at Lee Arena Saturday.
Washburn is now one game behind the Bearcats in the standings with four games left to play. The Ichabods are one game ahead of Central Missouri.
The Bearcats held Washburn to a season-low 13 points in the first half. Washburn made four of 23 shots in the half and trailed by 11 at the break.
Washburn used a 7-0 run early in the 2nd half to cut the deficit to 34-30 with 14:49 to play.
Nearly five minutes later, Javion Blake hit a three-pointer to make it 42-40. The Ichabods would not get any closer.
Joey Witthus led NW Missouri State with 22 points. Tyas Martin was the only Ichabod to score in double-figures (15). Brady Skeens had 14 rebounds, five blocks, and two steals.
Washburn outrebounded the Bearcats but turned it over a season-high 19 times.
The Washburn women's team made 32 of 60 shots in the game, beating NW Missouri 84-54.
Reagan Phelan led the Ichabods with 23 points (7-9 FG, 4-6 3FG) while Alexis McAfee scored a career-high 20 points on a perfect shooting night (8-8 FG, 4-4 3FG).
Washburn opened the game on a 12-0 run and led 23-5 after the first quarter.
The Ichabods took a 51-15 lead into halftime.
Washburn gained its largest lead three minutes into the second half, pushing the lead to 41 points.
