LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) -- Shawnee Heights senior Michael Hoffer placed second in the high jump at the KU Relays on Friday.

The defending state champ in the event went wire to wire with Shawnee Mission West's Jack Durst.

Hoffer missed his first two attempts at 6-6 and 6-8 before clearing the bar on the third try.

"I thought I prepared well going into this but adversity got the best of me and there's nothing I can do about that," said Hoffer.

Durst and Hoffer both could not get over 6-10, so Durst won because he had fewer misses.

"I just got to keep working and trying to improve from this. And that guy that jumped against me," said Hoffer. "I'm good friends with him. He's a great competitor."
