Wrong-way wreck injures 2 on Hwy. 24 in Jefferson Co.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Authorities say a wrong-way driver a wreck that sent two people to the hospital and closed a stretch of eastbound Hwy. 24 near Grantville.

The wreck happened just before 7 p.m. on Hwy. 24 near Wilson Rd.

The Kansas Highway Patrol crash log indicates Donna Lavin, 21, of Topeka was driving west in the eastbound lanes. Her Nissan Sentra side-swiped an oncoming Chevy Cobalt, sending the Cobalt into the ditch.

KHP says a passenger in Lavin's car, Diana Calderon, 19, of Topeka, along with the driver of the other car, Dennilson Pineda-Ortega, 19, of Topeka were taken to Stormont Vail. He was alone in his vehicle.

Neither of the injuries was believed life-threatening. The KHP reports all three people were wearing seatbelts.

Grantville is located just east of the Shawnee Co. line.

The eastbound lanes of Hwy. 24 at the wreck scene remained closed for about two hours Thursday night as authorities investigated and crews cleared up the wreckage.
