Washburn freshman earn scholarships to further fund education

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Two Washburn University freshman were presented with scholarships Thursday to help further their education.

Jennifer Lieurance and Gabrielle "Abby" Price were each presented with a $1,000 check from the Laurie Marie Scholarship. The students went through an application and interview process to be selected.

The scholarship was established just this year through the Topeka Community Foundation and public speaker Dr. David W. Carter. Dr. Carter donates a portion of his public speaking earnings to fund scholarships at different educational institutions.

"This is a brand new scholarship fund with us," said Marsha Pope, the President of the Topeka Community Foundation. "Very unique, in that someone would use a portion of their salary, fifty percent, and put it in a fund to give away, very inspirational, to assist someone with their generosity like that."

Dr. Carter named the scholarship after his mother-in-law, who he describes as a social impact volunteer and supporter of education.
