TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Topeka Veterans Day parade has a new Grand Marshall.
The Kansas Military Veterans Project announced Washburn University President, Dr. Jerry Farley, as the Grand Marshall for Topeka's 5th Annual Salute Our Heroes Festival and Veterans Parade.
He was honored Wednesday at Azura Credit Union.
Farley was drafted during the Vietnam War and served two years in the U.S. Army, first as a drill sergeant and later a drill sergeant instructor.
He says it's an honor to be selected and represent an organization to which he owes so much.
"It helped me with the things that I taught, leadership and teaching, and how to teach and those things,” said Farley. “It helped me decide what I wanted to do in a career and I came back and used the G.I. Bill to finish a Master's Degree which was really helpful and really very good, so I owe a lot to the military.”
Veterans Day festivities begin Saturday, November 11th at 8 a.m. with a Patriotic Pancake breakfast, followed by a Super Heroes Run, Walk and Crawl beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Topeka Veterans Parade will begin at 11 a.m.
All festivities are located in downtown Topeka.
