TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A west Topeka fast-food taco chain has closed its doors.
On Thursday, a closed message appeared on the front door and drive-thru menu board at the Taco Johns, near 11th and Wanamaker.
An employee, who did not want to be identified, told 13 NEWS the owners told him around 6:15 a.m. on Thursday to go ahead and lock the doors.
The restaurant employed around 10 ten people, the worker said.
The employee did not know if the current owners planned to sell the store or, if so, it would remain a Taco Johns.
In March, an officer fired a shot at the location while Topeka police were taking a suspect into custody. They had responded to reports of a person causing a disturbance and displaying firearm. Tieler Alan Lay, 18, was arrested in the incident. No one was injured by the shot.
In 2012, a fire tore through the store causing an estimated $150,000 in damages. Investigators determined the fire started in the kitchen, at or near the grease fryers.
