TPD warns citizens of new telephone scam

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Topeka Police Department is warning citizens of a telephone scam that has been reported in the area.

In a release, TPD says the phone number (785) 250-4520 has been making local calls and posing as a Sheriff's deputy.

The caller tells the person who answers they have failed to appear in court, are in contempt, and have a federal warrant out for their arrest.

Then, the caller asks for a credit or debit card to pay the bond over the phone. To add a sense of urgency, the caller says the deposit has to be made by Sept. 3.

These scammers are using actual Sheriff's and Judge's names as well as actual court case numbers, but TPD says they are not legitimate.

Under no circumstances should you provide money over the phone if this number call you.
