TPD releases victim's name in north Topeka shooting

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) — The Topeka Police Dept. continues to investigate a north Topeka shooting last Friday that sent one woman to the hospital.

According to police, Mercedes Hartness suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident.

On Friday, TPD said a supervisor at its impound lot, on the south side of the Kansas river, heard more than a dozen gunshots coming from the the north Topeka area.

Not long after that, police found Hartness, 26, after responding to reports of an injured woman in the 1200 block of Van Buren, about 20 blocks away from the impound lot.

Witnesses told police bullets were coming through the walls of an apartment. Officers secured six apartments to look for evidence.

TPD wouldn't comment on a possible suspect, but say they detained several people for questioning.
