Shawnee County Parks and Rec fixing parks with almost $290,000 of deferred money

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County Parks and Rec will spend about $290,000 of previously deferred money to fix parks and community centers.

Parks and Rec Director John Knight appeared in front of the County Commission Monday morning to discuss the budget. About $225,000 of the money will come from the department's operating budget.

Knight said that last November, the Parks and Rec Advisory Board did an in depth study and made a presentation to the Commission about the amount of capitol maintenance that was in their existing budget. The Advisory Board recommended some money be transferred to the maintenance fund.

Knight said the money will go to good use.

"We need to do some work occasionally at the West Lawn Cemetery and we also need to do some work at several of the community centers and upgrade our parks as well," Knight said.

The Commissioners approved the budget change.
